Two of Texas’ largest historically Black universities are set to receive a combined $8.7 million in federal education funding. In Arkansas, the state’s four HBCUs were awarded more than $4.2 million.
The Arkansas announcement came this week at Philander Smith University. The money is part of a U.S. Department of Education allocation of more than $174 million for HBCUs. Philander Smith is set to receive about $1.1 million. The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff is set to receive about $1.6 million. Shorter College and Arkansas Baptist College are included in the state total.
Leaders at the announcement also pointed to the IGNITE HBCU Excellence Act, a bipartisan bill aimed at grants for campus repairs and construction. That bill is separate from the money already awarded.
