The story of how Will Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff went from young artists in West Philadelphia to one of hip-hop’s most recognizable duos is coming to television.
Westbrook Studios and The Malar Group are developing “215,” a scripted coming-of-age series inspired by Smith’s early life and the formation of DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince.
Set in West Philadelphia during the late 1980s, the series will follow a teenage rapper, his DJ best friend and the group of friends around them as they navigate the city’s growing hip-hop scene and pursue a record deal.
The title “215” references Philadelphia’s telephone area code, tying the project directly to the city and culture that shaped the duo.
The series will explore ambition, friendship and the moment hip-hop began moving from local block parties into the mainstream.
For fans familiar with The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, the project offers a different look at Smith — focusing on the real-life experiences that came before his television and movie stardom.
