As the Michael Jackson biopic Michael continues generating buzz worldwide, legendary vocal coach, singer, and producer Stephanie Spruill is being recognized for her role in helping bring the King of Pop’s iconic sound to the big screen.
Spruill served as vocal coach for both Juliano Valdi, who portrays young Michael Jackson, and Jaafar Jackson, Michael’s nephew and the son of Jermaine Jackson, who stars as the adult Michael. She also worked closely with the Jackson 5 cast, helping them capture the vocal style and phrasing that defined Michael Jackson’s legendary career.
During a recent CNN interview, Valdi credited Spruill’s coaching as instrumental in helping him authentically recreate Michael’s signature voice.
For Spruill, the project marks a full-circle moment. During her career, she worked directly with Michael Jackson on songs including “Can You Feel It,” “This Place Hotel,” and “Dancing Machine.”
“I believe this is a full-circle moment to work on this masterpiece, Michael,” said Spruill. “As I often say, it’s Divine Intervention.”
A highly respected industry veteran, Spruill has worked with artists including Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan, Elton John, Quincy Jones, Tina Turner, and Barbra Streisand, while also mentoring future performers through her School of Voice & Artists Development.
As Michael continues its theatrical run, Spruill’s contributions underscore the talent working behind the scenes to bring one of music’s greatest entertainers to life for a new generation.
