After eight seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers, the NBA’s all-time leading scorer announced in July that he would join the Philadelphia 76ers for the 2026-27 season. James revealed the decision himself on social media, saying he wanted to continue competing for another championship.
James agreed to a two-year, $8 million contract, including a player option for the second season. The 76ers officially completed the signing on July 27, with James retaining his iconic No. 23 jersey number.
The move brings James back to the Eastern Conference and makes Philadelphia the fourth NBA franchise of his career, following the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat and Lakers.
James joins a revamped Philadelphia roster featuring Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, Jaylen Brown and VJ Edgecombe. The 76ers will enter the 2026-27 season with James seeking another championship during his record-setting 24th NBA season.
The decision also marks the end of James’ eight-year run in Los Angeles. During his Lakers tenure, he won the 2020 NBA championship and became the league’s all-time leading scorer. He averaged 20.9 points, 7.2 assists and 6.1 rebounds during the 2025-26 season.
For Philadelphia, James’ arrival represents another major chapter in the franchise’s pursuit of a championship. The 76ers have not won an NBA title since 1983.
James’ first season in Philadelphia will also make him the first player in NBA history to play at least one season for four different franchises while entering his 24th NBA season.
