Pastor Philip Anthony Mitchell is challenging Christians to strengthen their faith, stand firm in biblical truth, and confront the personal struggles that can hinder spiritual growth in his new book, Contend: Standing Boldly for Biblical Truth While Winning the War Within.
Mitchell, founder and lead pastor of Atlanta-based 2819 Church, released the book October 13, 2026. Published by Thomas Nelson, an imprint of HarperCollins Christian Publishing, the work draws inspiration from the biblical letter of Jude and its call for believers to contend for their faith.
At the heart of Contend is the idea that standing firm in faith requires more than publicly expressing one’s beliefs. Mitchell encourages readers to examine how their convictions shape their daily decisions while addressing internal struggles that can include fear, insecurity, complacency, and spiritual compromise.
The book connects the biblical message to contemporary challenges facing Christians, including cultural pressures and competing messages about faith and values. Mitchell emphasizes that spiritual growth involves both remaining grounded in Scripture and being honest about the personal battles that can affect one’s relationship with God.
His own journey provides context for that message. According to the book’s official website, Mitchell came to faith during a personal crisis in November 2003 and later navigated difficult seasons while building his ministry, including a period when he considered walking away. Those experiences inform the book’s focus on perseverance, spiritual discipline, and the importance of remaining committed through challenging circumstances.
Rather than framing contending for the faith solely as a response to the outside world, Mitchell also calls readers to look inward. The book encourages Christians to move beyond passive belief and pursue a more intentional approach to discipleship, accountability, and living out biblical principles.
Each chapter includes a “Takeaway Truth” and a “Contender’s Charge,” offering readers practical opportunities to reflect on the message and apply it to their lives.
The project also extends beyond the book itself. The official website features resources for individuals, families, churches, and ministry teams, along with the Contend Cohort, a six-month intensive program scheduled to begin January 25, 2027.
With Contend, Mitchell presents a challenge to believers to examine not only what they profess but how they live. His message calls Christians to pursue a faith marked by conviction, personal transformation, and a willingness to remain steadfast when doing so is difficult.
