Former Ohio State track and field star Tyler Johnson is preparing for a new chapter in his athletic career after officially becoming eligible to represent Nigeria in international competition.
Johnson enjoyed one of the most decorated sprinting careers in Ohio State history from 2018 to 2022, earning All-American honors in every season as a Buckeye while establishing himself as one of the Big Ten’s premier long sprinters.
Among his many accomplishments, Johnson received the prestigious Big Ten Medal of Honor in 2022, awarded annually to the university’s top male and female student-athletes for excellence in both athletics and academics. He was also named Big Ten Indoor Track Athlete of the Championships twice and shared Outdoor Track Athlete of the Championships honors in 2021.
The Dayton, Ohio native posted impressive personal bests throughout his collegiate career, including a 44.95-second outdoor 400-meter performance and a Big Ten-record 45.07 seconds in the indoor 400 meters.Before arriving at Ohio State, Johnson was a standout at Stivers School for the Arts, where he set the OHSAA Division II state record in the 400-meter dash.
With his international eligibility now switched to Nigeria, Johnson will have the opportunity to continue his track and field journey on the global stage while adding another chapter to an already accomplished career.
