Nearly four decades after A Different World first introduced audiences to life at the fictional Hillman College, the beloved series returns today with a new generation of students.
The 10-episode sequel series premieres September 24 on Netflix and centers on Deborah Wayne, the daughter of original characters Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert. Played by Maleah Joi Moon, Deborah arrives at Hillman as a freshman determined to establish her own identity while navigating college life, relationships and the legacy of her famous parents.
The new cast also includes Alijah Kai, Cornell Young IV, Jordan Aaron Hall, Kennedi Reece and Chibuikem Uche. The series brings back several original cast members, including Kadeem Hardison, Jasmine Guy, Darryl M. Bell and Cree Summer, with additional returning stars and new faces joining the Hillman community.
Original series director and producer Debbie Allen returns as an executive producer and directed the premiere episode. Felicia Pride serves as showrunner, writer and executive producer. The sequel was filmed at real HBCUs in the Atlanta area as the production sought to capture an authentic contemporary college experience.
The new series also features a refreshed version of the iconic theme song performed by Brandy, adding another connection between the original series and its new era.With Hillman welcoming a new class, A Different World is officially back in session, this time introducing its legacy to a new generation.
